Characteristics of the materials for CNC cutting tools

Among the common types of CNC tool materials, there are: high-speed steel, powder metallurgy high-speed steel, cemented carbide, PCD, CBN, and metal ceramics, which are all super-hard materials. High-speed steel tools are sharp and have good toughness, while cemented carbide tools have high hardness but poor toughness. The density of cemented carbide tools is significantly higher than that of high-speed steel tools. These two materials are the main materials for drills, broaches, milling cutters and taps. The performance of powder metallurgy high-speed steel lies between the two materials, and it is mainly used to manufacture rough milling cutters and taps.
High-speed steel cutting tools are not very sensitive to collisions because of their good toughness. However, carbide cutting tools are hard and brittle, and they are very sensitive to collisions. Their cutting edges are prone to chipping. Therefore, during the grinding process, one must be extremely careful in handling and placing the carbide cutting tools to prevent collisions between the CNC tools or the falling of the CNC tools.

Since the precision of high-speed steel cutting tools is mostly relatively low, their grinding requirements are not high either, and their prices are not high either, many manufacturing plants set up their own tool grinding workshops to grind these tools. However, for cemented carbide tools, they often need to be sent to professional grinding centers for grinding.
